All these questions will be answered when you meet a tatami artisan, who has spent half a century years measuring, repairing, replacing, sawing tatami for Kyotoites.

Tour Details

1.Visit a Buddhist temple to get the sense of being barefoot on tatami mats listen to a brief presentation of interesting facts of tatami from a tour guide. (15 min.)

2.Meet the artisan of the tour at a tatami mats workshop filled with the distinctive smell of rush. Learn how tatami mats are made and of what materials. (15 min.)

3.See the artisan sew a tatami mat by hand, just like the way people used to do in the old days. (15 min.)

4.Make your original miniature tatami. Pick out its shape from hexagonal, rectangular, and square, and border materials from literally infinite varieties of colors and motifs. (40 min.)
